Botanicals: bitter orange peel, yuzu fruit, water from the sea of japan

Etsu Pacific Ocean Gin is a London Dry gin bottled at a confident 45%. The botanical bill — bitter orange peel, yuzu fruit, water from the sea of japan — speaks to a traditional, juniper-forward approach that respects the heritage of the category.

The Hokkaido coastline in a bottle, this smartly presented gin from Asahikawa is distilled with bitter orange peel, yuzu fruit and water from the Sea of Japan. Makes a superb G&T with plenty of ice a wedge of grapefruit.

The Verdict

I have scored this 7.6/10. It is a competent London Dry that does not disappoint, delivering the core qualities one expects from the style at a reasonable price point. A reliable choice for the home bar.

Best Served

A classic G&T — Fever-Tree Indian Tonic, 1:2 ratio, with a twist of lemon peel and nothing more. This is a gin that respects the traditional serve, and the serve should respect it in return.

Etsu Pacific Ocean delivers clean, precise flavours. The bitter orange peel and yuzu work beautifully together, and the 45% ABV gives it proper weight. A London Dry with genuine Japanese character.

Etsu Pacific Ocean at 45% is a stunning London Dry. The Sea of Japan water adds a mineral, saline quality that's completely unique, and the yuzu fruit brings citrus like nothing else. The bitter orange peel grounds it beautifully. This is Japanese gin-making at its most inspired.

Olivia Wong VIPsAllowed - Yuzu makes it special
8/10

The yuzu fruit brings a citrus character you simply cannot get from European botanicals. Combined with bitter orange peel and that intriguing water from the Sea of Japan, this London Dry at 45% has real personality.

Zoe Chen VIPsAllowed - Interesting concept, mixed results
6/10

The sea of Japan water and yuzu are appealing ideas, but the bitter orange peel dominates at the expense of subtlety. At 45% it's got decent body for a London Dry, but the maritime element I was hoping for doesn't really come through. More conventional than expected.

The combination of yuzu and bitter orange peel creates a citrus profile that's distinctly Japanese. The 45% strength gives it backbone without harshness. An excellent London Dry with genuine provenance.

9/10

Etsu captures something of the Pacific Ocean — clean, bright, with a mineral quality from the Sea of Japan water. The yuzu is vibrant and the bitter orange adds depth. Seriously impressive at 45%.

9/10

There's a subtle saline quality here that must come from the Sea of Japan water. It pairs gorgeously with the yuzu and bitter orange. At 45% this London Dry is crisp, clean, and utterly compelling.
