The nineteen botanicals sometimes feel like too many cooks. The star anise and cinnamon are lovely individually but together they can overpower the juniper. At 44% it's well made but I prefer simpler botanical profiles.

Citadelle is a triumph of French distilling. The star anise, cardamom, cinnamon, and coriander create a symphony of flavour with juniper conducting. At 44% ABV and with that gorgeous long finish, this is as good as gin gets.

The star anise and coriander on the palate are beautifully balanced by warm cardamom and gentle cinnamon. The finish evolves from lingering spice to anise sweetness before a dry, peppery conclusion. Stunning.
