Diageo Unveils £150 Million Sustainable Distillery Plan for Scotland

Diageo has announced a £150 million investment in a new carbon-neutral distillery complex on the outskirts of Edinburgh, designed to produce both gin and vodka at scale while achieving net-zero emissions from day one of operation. The facility, slated to open in the fourth quarter of 2027, represents one of the largest single investments in sustainable spirits production anywhere in the world.

The announcement, made at a press conference in Edinburgh on Tuesday, comes as the spirits industry faces mounting pressure from consumers and regulators alike to reduce its environmental footprint. Diageo's Chief Sustainability Officer, Sarah Sheridan, described the project as "a blueprint for how large-scale spirits production can operate in a climate-conscious world."

The Numbers

According to documents filed with the Scottish Government, the new facility will have an annual production capacity of approximately twelve million litres of pure alcohol, with roughly sixty per cent allocated to gin production — primarily for the Tanqueray and Gordon's brands. The remaining capacity will serve Diageo's vodka portfolio, including Smirnoff and Ketel One.

The distillery will be powered entirely by renewable energy, combining a dedicated solar array with a long-term power purchase agreement for Scottish wind energy. Heat recovery systems will capture and reuse thermal energy from the distillation process, while a closed-loop water system aims to reduce water consumption by seventy per cent compared with Diageo's existing facilities.

Industry Reaction

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association welcomed the announcement, with chief executive Miles Beale noting that "Diageo's investment sends a powerful signal to the entire industry about the viability and necessity of sustainable production." However, some smaller producers have raised concerns that the scale of investment required for carbon-neutral distilling could widen the gap between major spirits companies and independent craft distillers.

"It's fantastic that Diageo is making this commitment," said one Scottish craft distiller who asked not to be named, "but the technology they're deploying costs millions. Most of us are still trying to work out how to afford a heat pump."

Construction Timeline

Construction is expected to begin in September 2026, with the project creating an estimated four hundred construction jobs and one hundred and twenty permanent positions once operational. The site, a former industrial estate near Musselburgh, was chosen for its proximity to Edinburgh's transport links and access to the Pentland Hills water source that Diageo has used for decades.

Planning permission was granted by East Lothian Council in January, following a public consultation period that drew broadly positive responses from the local community. A visitor centre and brand experience, comparable to the Johnnie Walker Princes Street attraction in Edinburgh, is included in the plans.

Market Context

The investment comes at a time when the global gin market continues to grow, albeit at a slower rate than the explosive expansion seen between 2018 and 2023. Industry analysts at IWSR estimate the global gin market will be worth approximately £14.2 billion by 2028, with premiumisation and sustainability credentials increasingly driving consumer choice.

Diageo's move also follows similar, if smaller, sustainability investments by competitors including Pernod Ricard's carbon-neutral whisky distillery in Kentucky and William Grant & Sons' biomass boiler installation at their Girvan facility.

For the gin sector specifically, the new facility's emphasis on Tanqueray production suggests Diageo sees significant room for growth in the premium London Dry category, even as contemporary and flavoured styles continue to capture market share. Full production details and the facility's inaugural releases are expected to be announced in early 2027.
